Math A Exam Guide
I. Logistics of Exam
A. June
16th, 12:15 p.m. Gym. Arrive
at 12:00 p.m.
B. No books or bags in the gym
C. Bring your TI-83 or equivalent
D. Bring pens and pencils
a. Use pen on the entire test except for graphs
E. Sign the declarations pages in pen when you are done
F. You may bring water, but no other beverages or food
G. No electronic devices other than a calculator
H. You must stay for at least 2 hours
I. Exam counts as 20% of your yearly grade
J. Reset calculator settings after you find a seat
a. Change radians to degrees
b. Turn Diagnostics on
K. Raise your hand to ask for a ruler, protractor, and compass as you need them
L. Raise your hand to go to the bathroom. You must be escorted
II. Outline of Exam
A. Part 1: Multiple Choice
i. 30 multiple choice
ii. you must answer each question
iii. no points for work
iv. use multiple choice strategies
1. substitution into algebraic expressions of possible solutions or hypothetical values
2. process of elimination
3. use TI-83
4. solve the problem and look for your solution among the choices
B. Parts 2 – 4: Extended Response
i. between 8 and 12 open ended questions
ii. answer all questions
iii. show your work
iv. use the TI-83
v. no “TI” talk
vi. guess and check must involve 2 wrong and 1 right guess
vii. draw diagrams
viii. do not cross out or erase any work
ix. there is no scrap paper
III. Review Strategies
A. Weekly Problems – There are over 20 weekly problem sets on the
district website which are modeled after the Math A Exam
B. Review books – Purchase a review book at any bookstore (Barron’s is
a popular one)
C. Exam book – There are about 12 previous exams in that exam book I
gave you. Do more than just the exams assigned
D. Notes, Textbook - Everything we have done this year, except proofs,
is on the exam
E. Master the TI-83 calculator
E. Attend the following review classes either in Mr. Kornfield’s room or
Mr. Lindner’s room:
May 9th, 2:30 – 3:30
May 16th, 2:30 – 3:30
May 23, 2:30 – 3:30
June 6th, 2:30 – 3:30
June 15th, 3:00 – 4:15
